Father’s Day

“I’m a father, that’s what matters most. Nothing matters more.”  - Gordon Brown

Happy Father’s Day to All our Fathers

Fathers day gives us a chance to honour those who stand at the helm and lead their family through life’s battles

Paul draws this Powerful similarity!

1 Thessalonians 2:11-12 (NIV)11For you know that we dealt with each of you as a father deals with his own children, 12encouraging, comforting and urging you to live lives worthy of God, who calls you into his kingdom and glory.

Right here is a Fathers purpose!!!

Good fathers are made, not born.

Our perfect example to follow as fathers is God our Father. His Word is our manual

A good father reflects the Love of the Heavenly Father

Preparing a sermon on Fathers was not easy – Doing research on sermons about Fathers day are very limited.

So I realized this: Nowhere in the Bible is a sermon directed to a Father’s day as such.

After all:

2 Timothy 3:16-17 (Amp)16 All Scripture is God-breathed [given by divine inspiration] and is profitable for instruction, for conviction [of sin], for correction [of error and restoration to obedience], for training in righteousness [learning to live in conformity to God’s will, both publicly and privately—behaving honorably with personal integrity and moral courage]; 17 so that the [a]man of God may be complete and *proficient, outfitted and thoroughly equipped for every good work.

*Proficient (Vaardig): Competent or skilled in living

Then I realized… Therefore all scripture is directed to fathers.

Oh what a responsibility comes with the title – FATHER.

“There is no more vital calling or vocation for me than FATHERING” – John Throop

“One night a father overheard his son praying, “Dear God, make me the kind of man my daddy is.”  Later that night the father prayed, “Dear God, make me the kind of man my son wants me to be.”

What does scripture teach about a father?

A Father LOVES:

1 John 4:7-8 (NIV) – 7Dear friends let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. 8Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.

A Father leads:

Proverbs 20:7 (Amp) - The righteous man who walks in integrity and lives life in accord with his [godly] beliefs—How blessed [happy and spiritually secure] are his children after him [who have his example to follow].

Definition of Integrity: “The quality or state of being undivided” ® to be single minded

James 1:8 (Amp) - being a double-minded man, unstable and restless in all his ways [in everything he thinks, feels, or decides]. ® This type of person is Not a man of integrity.

A Father teaches:

Proverbs 4:1 (Amp) - Hear, O children, the instruction of a father, And pay attention [and be willing to learn] so that you may gain understanding and intelligent discernment.

You have a huge impact on your family. It’s what you live after you teach…

A Father provides:

Matthew 7:9-11 (LB)If a child asks his father for a loaf of bread, will he be given a stone instead? 10 If he asks for fish, will he be given a poisonous snake? Of course not! 11 And if you hard-hearted, sinful men know how to give good gifts to your children, won’t your Father in heaven even more certainly give good gifts to those who ask him for them?

We see a clear parallel between fathers here on earth and our Father in heaven.

For a child to understand the heart of our Heavenly Father he learns from the example of his earthly father.

A Father disciplines and corrects:

Proverbs 3:11-12 (NIV)11My son, do not despise the Lord’s discipline and do not resent his rebuke, 12because the Lord disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in.

Hebrews 12:10-11 (Amp)10 For our earthly fathers disciplined us for only a short time as seemed best to them; but He disciplines us for our good, so that we may share His holiness. 11 For the time being no discipline brings joy, but seems sad and painful; yet to those who have been trained by it, afterwards it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness [right standing with God and a lifestyle and attitude that seeks conformity to God’s will and purpose].

Discipline is more effective if the children know they are loved.

A Father protects:

Proverbs 14:26 (LB)26 Reverence for God gives a man deep strength; his children have a place of refuge and security.

A healthy respect for God is a form of protection

A family is safest with a Dad who loves and fears God

A Father leaves a Legacy:

Proverbs 17:6 (LB)An old man’s grandchildren are his crowning glory. A child’s glory is his father.

3 John 1:4 (NIV) – I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.

A Father loves – leads – teaches – provides and disciplines.

The life you live today Dad / Father will affect the future of your family.

1 Thessalonians 2:11-12 (NIV)11For you know that we dealt with each of you as a father deals with his own children, 12encouraging, comforting and urging you to live lives worthy of God, who calls you into his kingdom and glory.
