Communion

“With respect to Holy communion, it is up to the one taking the communion to decide whether they are in a state of Grace and worthy to receive the Communion elements – Each one of us makes that decision.”

– Roger Mahony

By Pastor George Lehman

You never have to explain to someone about being Born-again and that’s in a Relationship with Jesus, simply because they know.

The day before the celebration of the Passover Jesus meets with the 12 disciples in the upper room:

Luke 22:19-20 (NIV)19And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.” 20In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.”

The word used as: Communion: in the Greek is Koinonia: the coming together of believers to share in the life and death of Christ.

That is why the Lord’s Supper (Communion) must be taken with absolute reverence, “awe” and respect.

1 Corinthians 11:23-33 (NIV)23For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, 24and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.” 25In the same way, after supper he took the cup saying, “This is the new covenant in my blood; do this whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.” 26For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes. 27So then, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. 28Everyone ought to examine themselves before they eat of the bread and drink from the cup. 29For those who eat and drink without discerning the body of Christ eat and drink judgment on themselves. 30That is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have fallen asleep. 31But if we were more discerning with regard to ourselves, we would not come under such judgment. 32Nevertheless, when we are judged in this way by the Lord, we are being disciplined so that we will not be finally condemned with the world. 33So then, my brothers and sisters, when you gather to eat, you should all eat together.

What are the reasons that we partake of the Lord’s Supper?

It’s the one-way Jesus asked us to remember – “Lest we forget”

Communion is the Passover.

Exodus 12:11-14 (NIV)11This is how you are eat it: with your cloak tucked into your belt, your sandals on your feet and your staff in your hand. Eat it in haste; it is the Lord’s Passover. 12”On the same night I will pass through Egypt and strike down every first born- both men and animals – and I will bring judgment on all the gods of Egypt. I am the LORD. 13The blood will be a sign for you on the houses where you are; and when I see the blood, I will pass over you. No destructive plague will touch you when I strike Egypt.” 14”This is a day you are to commemorate; for the generations to come you shall celebrate it as a festival to the Lord- a lasting ordinance.”

Luke 22:1 & 15 (NIV)1Now the Feast of Unleavened Bread, called the Passover was approaching.
15And he said to them, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer.”

Israel was to remember the Passover.

Revelation 12:11 - “Overcome by the Blood of the Lamb”

Here a serious warning, Numbers 9:13 (NIV) – But if a man who is ceremonially clean and not on a journey fails to celebrate the Passover, that person must be cut off from his people because he did not present the Lord’s offering at the appointed time. That man will bear the consequences of his sin.

How much more when we have communion at church should you be there and not make excuses???

See what 1 Corinthians 11:29-30 (Amp) says:

1 Corinthians 11:29-30 (Amp) 29For anyone who eats and drinks [without solemn reverence and heartfelt gratitude for the sacrifice of Christ], eats and drinks a judgment on himself if he does not recognize the body [of Christ].  *30That [carless and unworthy participation] is the reason why many among you are weak and sick, and a number sleep [in death].

*Romans 8:9 (Amp) – However, you are not [living] in the flesh [controlled by the sinful nature] but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God lives in you [directing and guiding you]. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him [and is not a child of God].

1 Corinthians 10:16 (NIV) – Is not the cup of thanksgiving for which we give thanks a participation in the blood of Christ? And is not the bread that we break a participation in the body of Christ?

Paul says we must remember: If you never had a personal experience with Jesus, you cannot draw on a memory of the experience.

NOTE:

1 Corinthians 11:27-29 (NIV)27So then, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. 28Everyone ought to examine themselves before they eat of the bread and drink from the cup. 29For those who eat and drink without discerning the body of Christ eat and drink judgment on themselves.

We don’t partake in the Lord’s Supper just because everyone else does (it’s a churchie thing to do!)

We don’t partake in the Lord’s Supper if we don’t understand its meaning

We don’t do it because it feels good (or get some quick fix)

We don’t do it because it has some mystic power for us

It’s not a church religious ritual

This table of the Lord speaks of God’s Love and Grace

Why Jesus came:

Max Lucado said: “And as the Hands of Jesus opened for the nails, the doors of Heaven opened for you.”

“I did it all for you”
